  • two birds

two birds..in a bush?? or with one stone! ( forbid the thought )....today I felted thrift store wool sweaters! my sis in law who taught home ec, or FACS as they nowadays call it, when asked last week, thought you ought to leave them intact for the hot water washing.

I remembered to start my Christmas gift project today at last, after bringing hubby to his 6 A.M. purity group, picking him up at 7:30 a.m......... and so tossed four pretty wool sweaters into the hot water wash.  THEN looked online in google to see, was I remembering things??

     Nope.

FIRST you cut them apart, taking off buttons, tags, slicing along the seams, or removing bulky seams altogether. HEE HEE.  So, I was on my knees on the basement floor, with my sewing shears, doing what SEEMED to be surgery on WET SHEEP!!

loverly!!   got it done, and now have a bag of pretty wool lint for pretty spring bird's nests!!! 2009_1109felting0001 2009_1109felting0006

AND some pretty nice pieces of felted wool,2009_1109felting0007 for projects my mind says I can create, I have a brain and two hands, so why can't I??  using what God gave me  2009_1109felting0014

Hello my name is Christie and I have always wanted to learn to do felting for projects. Could you give me your instructions please?  Have you decided what you will do for projects yet?

@Shepherdsfold - hello! Christie.........I had checked out a library book on this... after seeing purses made of old sweaters that had been felted, in a shop in the town of Lutsen MN.   I liked the way they had warm colors, nice texture, and were using something formerly useful, in a new way!

The day I felted the sweaters I'd collected since last year, from Saver's thrift shop.....I googled "felted sweaters" and read those arcticles to refresh my own memory.  BEFORE washing in HOT water, you will cut them apart at the seams. Remove buttons, and labels.  One author said to cut off bulky seams, I did not do this, and mine are perfectly wonderful.   So, take the pieces, throw them in a top loading agitating washer, and wash in hot water.  The agitation is necessary for felting.  One author recommended putting the pieces into the type of mesh bag you might use for stockings....because the wool pieces make alot of lint.  Yes they made alot of lint!! but I did not have a mesh bag..... I have a lint thingie on the end of my water out hose from the machine and that was FULL, and still there was wool lint in my washtub too. And the washer.      I dried mine in the sun.... but if they are not felted to what you feel they ought you can run them through again, or put them in a dryer to dry.  What I am making, still an imagining in my mind, kind of deal so far.  I SEE it, but am not ready to do it yet.

Oh thank you so much for returning with so much detail.  I will have to find some wool things now and get started.  I am hoping to make some Tree ornaments for the family.  Do you have suggestions or sites that you recommend for this sort of thing.  Also, I have a front load washer (big family) will that work?  Would you consider being my friend here?  Sincerely Growing in Christ Christie

@Shepherdsfold - oh I apologise for lateness!! you need to use an agitator machine.... front loader won't be so good.  and yes I'd be your friend here....... thanks for asking

I have been running myself ragged with hubby's recovery and many days have not even gotten near our computer lately. He has been filling out applications for jobs.... and I've kept my fingers busy with knitting and quilting for Christmas.

Far as sites........ I just googled felted wool, and many came up!! hope you've found some......
